Sample Weekly Lesson plan for grade 5, 6, or 7 (depending on the level of the child) using Saxon Math 76 book as a resource
This lesson plan outline works towards the goal of familiarity with basic math concepts. A basic 5 day school week plans for 3 days using the textbook or worksheets, and 2 days left open for interactive, integrated, and experiential activities such as games, experiments, research, videos, studying lives of great mathematicians, etc. This organizational plan helps the student progress and also keeps math fun and interesting. It reduces stress and lessens anxiety which in turn makes the other days more productive. Each week includes a sample problem for "Student mentoring," which means something that the student should be able to explain and teach back to the teacher or to another student. When a student has the responsibility to teach, they learn deeper, and a teacher can better understand how well the student is learning, and if there are any holes in the student's understanding. This is an informal weekly assessment of how the student is grasping the math concept being covered. I also recommend that the student complete a personal mastery project twice a year. This is a student led project on anything that relates to math. This helps make connections between math and real world applications. Sample grading rubric for the mastery project is included. |
